The Salesian Vocational Training Center in Rango currently offers courses in 4 different sectors: construction, carpentry, welding and sewing, all courses lasting two years. The recipients of this work are mainly young people, and among them not a few very young single mothers, together with girls and boys aged 17 to 25, in a situation of poverty and abandonment.
The condition of the country's women, and especially of young women, registers alternating signals: if on the one hand, in fact, Rwanda has managed to reduce maternity deaths faster than any other African country, on the other hand the increase in the rate of teenage pregnancies have undergone exponential growth in recent years, starting to represent a major obstacle to social and economic development, especially among the poorest sections of the population.
While working on educational and family involvement projects to promote responsible and conscious parenting, the Sons of Don Bosco have also worked to ensure that young single mothers can find employment or start a small business capable of guaranteeing them and their little ones to live in a dignified manner.
For this reason, in collaboration with the Salesian Mission Office "Missioni Don Bosco" of Turin, they have launched a project for the purchase of 40 sewing machines, and to train and empower as many young mothers, so that they acquire the professional skills enabling them to start a small income-generating business: a modest tailor's shop, a dressmaker's atelier, or a simple sewing workshop, perhaps, which guarantees a minimum economic income for their small family.
