Spain – Pamplona Salesian Institute wins Siemens National Prototype Competition

08 July 2021

(ANS - Pamplona) - The "Augmented Reality applied to Industrial Maintenance" project created by two students from the Salesian Institute in Pamplona won the twelfth edition of the Siemens National Prototype Competition. Nacor Bea Galán and Alejandro Apesteguía Vázquez, students of the second year of Industrial Automation and Robotics of the Salesian school, under the guidance of Prof. José Miguel Puncel of the Department of Electricity and Electronics, developed a system that allows the application of augmented reality to industrial maintenance and was implemented in the plant of the Gestamp company in Orcoien.

The annual competition promoted by Siemens aims to encourage innovation, the study of digitization in universities and vocational training institutes, and foster competitiveness and teamwork among students in Spain.

"Our project consisted in the development of a system that would enable the application of augmented reality to industrial maintenance. By placing a tablet on an installation, a virtual layer is superimposed through which the technician can automatically identify each device, access complementary information such as diagrams, or even monitor or modify process variables," explained its creators.

The winning students, who during the last year did their dual vocational training internships in two companies in Navarre, produced their project making it compatible with their internships and studies.

They developed a system to facilitate the maintenance of the structures, applying the advantages offered by Augmented Reality, such as the accentuation of perceptible reality, to provide more information than is visible to the naked eye.

“We were able to improve the work of the facility maintenance technicians by developing software suited to customer needs. With the system, the technician can access all the information of the component he is testing,” say the two students.

And they add: “This allows you to easily manipulate any element, giving total control of the automated line to any authorized user. This greatly reduces the time it takes to diagnose problems, as the real-time view of the field helps to trace the cause more easily.”

And all this is already in place in the plant that the Gestamp company has in Orcoyen.

The prize also includes an endowment of 10,000 euros in automation material for the Salesian center and a trip to Amberg for the two winners of the competition, where they will be able to visit the Siemens factory in that city.

Furthermore, the visibility and prestige of the competition should not be underestimated, as over 25 prototypes from various Vocational Training Centers and universities across the country took part in this 12th edition.

“With this award, the boys and girls who study Vocational Training see that nothing is impossible, that with hard work and effort they can do everything they can imagine,” say the Salesians of Pamplona.
