Brazil – “Where God puts us we must bear fruit”: testimony of Fr Alho da Costa

(ANS - Recife) - The Salesian Congregation is made up of many men willing to serve God and men who go wherever the Lord calls; people who work daily for the good of the little flock entrusted to them, and who when asked to leave everything to start a new mission, trust in Providence and start all over again. Salesians like Fr Sérgio Lúcio Alho da Costa, a native of Manaus: after having served for five years in the "St Luigi Gonzaga" Province of Brazil-Recife (BRE), he now returns to his homeland to be parish priest of the Salesian Shrine “Our Lady of Fatima” in Porto Velho.

How was the reception of this novelty?

I welcome with a great spirit of faith and gratitude the new obedience that my Salesian superiors have assigned to me. It is interesting that I have already worked in the region, in my first year of priesthood, as pastoral coordinator of the Don Bosco Institute. It will be a wonderful experience; I already know the people, I know the reality, and now serving as a shepherd, as a guide for those souls, will be a great joy. The expectation is to serve and evangelize this people of our Amazon.

How has your experience in these five years in Recife been and what are your expectations in this new Mission?

They have been five wonderful years. I must just thank God for the privilege of being Rector of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and of having served this generous and cordial people of Pernambuco. I was struck by the welcome and generosity and I was very happy to have shared the evangelization and care of the people of God, of the Salesian Family who attend the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. I am grateful for the position I have had, also as a spiritual animator of the Association of Mary Help of Christians (ADMA), a wonderful experience for which I can only be grateful; as well as for helping in the Salesian Institute, by being present in the courtyard and by helping in confessions.

Truly, it has been five years of God's gifts in my life. I can only thank and say that, as far as we Salesians are concerned, we are divided as Provinces for a juridical and organizational matter, but whoever is Salesian is Salesian for the world. Therefore, I also consider the North-East (Editor's note: the BRE Province) as my Province. As Don Bosco teaches us: where God puts us, we must bear fruit.

Will your evangelization service via social networks continue even now?

One good thing God brought up in this pandemic time was the creation of my YouTube channel, which I didn't have before. I had other profiles on other social networks, such as Facebook and Instagram, which I used reasonably. This channel was a gift from God: thousands of people access it and it is a way to evangelize. My plan is to continue, to reach people's hearts and help them grow spiritually as well.
