Chennai, India - April 2020 - The "Don Bosco Relief Service" (DBRS), under the auspices of "SURABI", the project office of the Salesian Province of Madras (INM), is responding to the COVID-19 pandemic during the mandatory quarantine phase in and around Chennai. The Salesians are taking care of the most vulnerable communities in Tamil Nadu, migrant bricklayers and kiln workers who are out of work in Chennai, in the districts of Kanchipuram and Tiruvallur, and who due to the closure of the railway services have not been able to return to their homes. Consequently, they are stuck in town, forced to live on the street or in railway stations. The Salesians Fr Alphonse Arulanandam, Director, Fr Xavier Packiam, INM Provincial Economer, Fr Edwin Vasanthan, Provincial Councilor, and Fr Francis Bosco, Director of the "INM Migrant Desk", are overseeing the awareness-raising operations for these stranded migrant workers from northern India. In Chennai alone, around 3,000 families have been monitored and supported.
