Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal - 1910 - In 1903, the Salesians took over the "João Baptista Machado" Orphanage on the island of Terceira, in the Azores. It was the first Salesian presence on the island, which was later enriched with an arts and crafts school for needy youngsters. Then, in 1910, the establishment of the Republic in Portugal led to the closure of the orphanage.
