Mozambique – Meeting of the Social Communications Delegates of Africa-Madagascar

21 September 2023

(ANS - Maputo) – Africa - a continent full of diversity, challenges and potential. It was there that the Salesian media delegates met to discuss a common strategy for the future that will support education and evangelisation through mediaon the continent. This remarkable meeting took place from 16-20 September 2023 in Maputo in Mozambique and brought a lot of inspiration and ideas for action.

The Salesians are known for their pastoral and evangelisation work among young people. In the age of digital media, they ask themselves how to effectively communicate the message of the Gospel through modern tools. In today's world full of modern technology and media, Salesian media delegates feel obliged to use these tools to reach out to young people. The meeting in Africa was an excellent opportunity to share experiences and ideas. Delegates represented different countries of the continent, as well as different areas of media. Together, they discussed the challenges of communication in Africa, as well as how to reach young people more effectively.

This assembly was part of the face-to-face encounters planned by the Communication department of Rome for every region in the world. The aim was to get to know each other, follow up on the communication projects in the region, share ideas, visions, and projects, review the communication plan of the provinces, network further and explore some themes and projects further.

Fourteen delegates, including the provincial in charge of communication in Africa, Rev Fr. Roland Mintsa and Fr. Maciej Makula, from the Department of Social Communication in Rome, were present for the meeting. The topics presented and discussed were Salesian Institutional Communication, Provincial Communication Strategy, Social Communication and its challenges in today's world and its implication to education today, and the African Church in social media.

Particular attention was devoted to the "Voices" and "Mobile Journalism Project." It was unanimously agreed that training in Mobile Journalism should commence with the delegates themselves. Subsequently, the website of the region and how to give visibility to Don Bosco’s dream at 9 years of age too was discussed in detail. In conclusion, the participants drafted a roadmap, outlining goals and action plans for the year ahead to be implemented within the provinces in Africa.

The meeting of Salesian media delegates from Africa-Madagascar was not only an opportunity to share experiences and ideas, but also to build a common strategy for the future. The media have a huge impact on the lives of young people around the world, and Salesians want to use this influence for good. The work of education and evangelisation through the media is becoming increasingly important, especially in the context of the dynamic development of technology. The concerted efforts of the Salesians in Africa in this area have great potential to bear fruit not only on the continent, but all over the world.
