Uruguay - Flood victims receive help from the boys of "Talleres Don Bosco"

28 June 2016

(ANS - Montevideo) - For the third consecutive year, the "Talleres Don Bosco" (TDB – Don Bosco Laboratories) in Montevideo, Uruguay, have organized community service experience based on manual labour. It’s called "BOSCOSUMA".

Last weekend a group of 40 teenagers and young people linked to the TDB arrived in the town of San José de Mayo, 80 km from the capital, to see for themselves the situation of some families who were affected by the recent floods and to help in rebuilding their homes. In April, the level of water in Rio San Jose grew higher and the city was submerged by the worst flooding in decades, which caused more than 1,200 people to leave their homes.

Plaster, ceilings, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, electrical systems, and various other services that are compatible with their technical training were offered by the students of the TDB to people in need. Regardless of the level of competence of the students, they all found ways to assist.

The pupils and past pupils were joined by other groups and staff of the TDB,  the children and staff of the "Children's Club - La Casita" and the Youth Centre "Encarando" of the Christian Association of Young people of San Jose, who all came together to form a very heterogeneous group that was another positive element of this experience.

Motivated by the desire to improve the quality of life of the displaced families, the volunteers experienced a weekend of shared work, effort, learning, joy in serving others, friendship and community life.

TDB was founded in 1893 and currently has 450 students who are trained as industrial mechanics, auto mechanics, carpentry and graphic communication. They are also offered Baccalaureate courses in Management, Information Technology, Sport and Recreation. TDB offers opportunities to find employment for young people from critical environments and short courses for adults in aluminium work, basic carpentry and advanced craftsmanship, restoration of furniture, sculpture, woodwork and upholstery.

TDB is a school that seeks to introduce children not only to the world of work, but also that of mercy; to improve not only the people, but life and society.
