25 October 2022

Southwest Sumba – SMK (Vocational High School) Don Bosco in Southwest Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tengggara Province, held a Workshop on the Implementation of Bullying-Free Schools. This activity took place in the school hall on Thursday (20/10/2022). The resource persons were the Police Chief of Southwest Sumba Regency, I Gede Ariada and the activist of Women and Children-Talita Kum, Imelda Sulis Setiawati. The activity was attended by students of grade X and grade XI of the two majors, namely, Electrical Power Installation Engineering and Network Computer Engineering. Grade XII students did not attend it since they were still doing the internship. The activity was also attended by teachers and staff.

In his remarks, the Principal of SMK Don Bosco, Fr. Dominggus Telupun, M.Ed., said that the purpose of holding this workshop was to prevent bullying, especially within the school.

"We, as educators as well as parents of students in the education unit, should be at the forefront of preventing bullying among students," he said. The Police Chief, I Gede Ariada said that the most important thing in bullying among students is to be aware of one’s own situation. A student, he emphasized, needs to be aware that he is a learner who understands that, if the actions he does can harm others, it can even hurt others more than what we think. He also invited all students to make SMK Don Bosco as an example of a school that is free from bullying.

"Hopefully, with the Workshop on the Implementation of Bullying-Free Schools, we can become an Agent of School Change. So that students can follow the teaching and learning as expected and avoid bullying," he said.

Meanwhile, Sulis Setiawati said that the factors causing bullying were problematic families, schools, peer groups, social environments, TV shows and social media.
"Bullying can be done by everyone and bullying can also be cured by everyone. In addition to parents who are responsible for bullying prevention, teachers as educators can also implement bullying prevention to students in schools to create a friendly, safe and comfortable school," he explained.

She added that there are actually ways to prevent bullying in schools, namely by continuing to campaign for it, being sensitive to the victim’s situation, and implementing policies related to bullying.

The activity was closed with the selection of 30 students who will become School Change Agents. Those selected will be guided by Intra-School Student Organization coach, Fransiska Lamunde, and guidance-counseling teacher, Fr. Ignatius Haryanto, SDB.
