Rome, Italy - 2 August 2024 - In the second working session of the World Social Communication Conference "Shaping Tomorrow", Fabio Bolzetta, journalist and President of the Italian Association of Catholic Webmasters (WECA), offered some examples of changes in the field of communication that are taking place in Italy and that can be taken as a model because they will take place, perhaps with different modalities and timing, in the rest of the world. He illustrated the differences in audiences between the information enjoyed by traditional media (mostly adults) and digital media (young people) - and the dangers of digital information that often depends on algorithms (for certain social networks and apps) or is mediated and interpreted not by professionals but by influencers with their own motivations and interests. "There has never been a time in history when it has been so easy, simple, possible, free, immediate, to communicate... yet we live in a period of intergenerational incommunicability," he further observed, also accompanying the listeners in recognising the opportunities that have developed since web 2.0 and today with the increasingly evident spread of Artificial Intelligence. In the face of the challenges identified, the speaker recalled the centrality of certain values for those who perform the mission of communication: authenticity, authority, awareness, instantaneity, competence, constancy and collaboration.

Rome, Italy - 2 August 2024 - After the opening ceremony, the first working session of "Shaping Tomorrow" saw the intervention of one of the central coordinators of this World Communication Conference, Fr Fabio Pasqualetti, Dean of the Faculty of Social Communication at the Salesian Pontifical University. He spoke on the topic 'Epochal Changes: Digital Culture and Artificial Intelligence', illustrating the elements of today's communication. In the face of the technical, anthropological, educational, social and political challenges it entails, Fr Pasqualetti proposed effective communication processes and solutions for the Church and the Salesian Family, starting from a reflection on Christian identity today and the communicative capacity of a witness based on coherence and credibility, as well as - in response to today's multicultural and social reality - on dialogue and merciful action. Thus, in conclusion, quoting Pope Francis, the Dean of the FSC recalled the purpose of communication to be at the service of human encounter. He further explained the theme in today’s context of young people to be different from the times of Don Bosco, as well as in the past 30 years. Speaking of Salesian context of Social communications, Fr Pasqualetti recalled the theme of last General chapter; ‘What kind of Salesian for today’ in the context of the new language of communication and the difficulties on communications today between family, society and Church.

Rome, Italy - August 2024 - More than 150 delegates and social communication experts gathered in the morning of Friday, 2 August 2024 at the inauguration of the World Conference on Social Communication "Shaping Tomorrow", promoted by the Social Communication Sector of the Salesian Congregation and the Faculty of Social Communication Sciences of the Salesian Pontifical University (UPS). Those present, gathered at the Aula Magna of the UPS, were able to listen to the welcome messages and introductory speeches by Fr Maciej Makuła, main coordinator of the event; of the Rector Magnificus of UPS, Fr Andrea Bozzolo; of Fr Gildasio Mendes, General Councillor for Social Communication; and finally of the Rector Major of the Salesians of Don Bosco, Card. Ángel Fernández Artime.

(ANS – Rome) – In the presence of the Rector Major of the Salesian Congregation, Cardinal Ángel Fernández Artime, the World Conference on Social Communication "Shaping Tomorrow" began on time at 9 a.m. on 2 August 2024 in the Aula Magna of the Pontifical Salesian University (UPS). In the room full of Delegates and communication experts from all over the Salesian world, the first messages of greeting and direction of the work resounded. "I am convinced that the digital world today is one of the indispensable challenges for the Congregation", the 10th Successor of Don Bosco shared in his introductory address.

Auronzo di Cadore, Italy – July 2024 - From 28 to 31 July, the Saint Dominc Savio Alpine House in Auronzo di Cadore hosted 80 Salesians, including rectors, youth ministry leaders and other Salesians with pastoral roles in the local works in the Triveneto, offering everyone a valuable opportunity to reflect on and plan for the future of the Italy-North-East Province (INE). On 28 July, the new Provincial, Fr Silvio Zanchetta, presented the guidelines for the 2024-2030 period, tracing a path of growth and renewal for the community. Following this, Fr Emanuele Zof, Provincial Delegate for Youth Ministry, illustrated the provincial calendar for the year 2024-25. The following morning was dedicated to the spiritual retreat with a reflection led by Professor Roberta Ronchiato. In the afternoon, Fr Paolo Pontoni and Fr Luca Bernardello spoke on consecrated identity and vocational fruitfulness, exploring the deep meaning of the Salesian vocation. Then the participants, divided into groups, further explored the theme, led by the moderators Fr Mario Guariento, Fr Marco Cescut, and Dr Manuela Dal Monte. On 30 July, Fr Alberto Poles, Provincial Economer, presented the provincial finantial balance sheet and Dr Tessari, from the University of Verona, presented the first balance sheet of the province's pastoral mission. In the afternoon, Fr Zanchetta introduced the topic of reshaping and downsizing the province, involving participants in group work to discuss and propose new strategies. The last day of the event saw the presentation of the laity who will follow the Salesian works in Mezzano, Este and Bardolino, led by Fr Gabriele Quinzi.

(ANS – Venice) – The school sector also recognises the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In the last year and a half, with the spread of generative AI in different areas, from work to everyday life, the debate on the use of this technology and possible developments has intensified more and more, also involving the education sector. Although it is an ever-changing technology, the potential benefits to support teachers and students are manifold. For this reason, for the new school year, the Salesian St Mark Province of North-East Italy (INE), supported by "MR Digital", an Italian integration and technological consulting company, has decided to adopt "Gemini AI", the innovative AI integrated into "Google Workspace for Education" throughout its network of schools.
