10 stats to know about the environment

The Salesian Bulletin of Brazil lists 10 environmental statistics on which to reflect.

1) 70% of the earth's surface is covered with water (2.2% fresh water; only 0.3% available for consumption);
2) 3.4 million: the number of people who die on average every year in the world due to contaminated water;
3) Deforestation is the main concern in terms of environmental issues;
4) A ton of recycled paper:

- saves 22 trees
- saves 71% of electricity
- reduces air pollution by 74%

5) Between 200 and 450 years: the time for plastic cups to decompose in nature;
6) 500 years: the maximum decomposition time of aluminum and batteries;
7) The United States, China, India and Brazil are the countries that produce and consume the most plastic;
8) 8 billion dollars: the impact that plastic pollution has on the world economy;
9) 1970: the date on which World Environment Day was celebrated for the first time;
10) At the Tokyo Olympics, now scheduled for 2021, the medals to be awarded were created from electronic waste.
