(ANS – Mumbai) – What is common between veteran Bollywood film makers Mahesh Bhatt, Anand Patwardhan and famous actor Akshay Kumar? They are all alumni of the reputed Don Bosco High School at Matunga, Mumbai. While the trio took the mass medium to greater heights in their own right to entertain and drive home a lesson or two, their monk mentors, known as the Salesian priests of the Catholic Church have also started reaching out to the masses through the medium of the films.

The second annual edition of the Don Bosco Youth Film Festival of India will screen 24 short films under 30 minutes duration at 90 venues across 22 states in the country on January 28 and 29. The short films revolve around the theme of youth, their issues and concerns and nation building. "The mega event is to celebrate the spirit of youth and we are touched with the overwhelming response from across the country from all faiths and communities irrespective of caste, creed, colour or language," Salesian Father Joaquim Fernandes, a delegate from Boscom South Asia, the communication wing told me. While last year the one-day event screened 20 short films across 55 locations in 19 states and attracted over 6 lakh viewers, this year the organizers expect 8-10 lakh viewers.  The entry is free at all venues.

This film festival is a unique attempt to showcase the aspirations of the youth, the challenges and the struggles they go through and their issues and concerns are highlighted in these short films. "Film is a powerful medium that can communicate, educate, elevate and inspire the young viewers," Father Harris Pakkam, SDB, director of the film festival, says. The theme of the film festival is the celebration of the spirit of youth in a positive and inspiring way, narrating stories of young people who face challenges and struggles of life with courage, determination and faith to emerge as inspiring individuals. This multi-city short film festival has also roped in young people associated with Don Bosco schools, DB alumni and film lovers as well. The spirit of the festival is to infuse in young people new hopes, optimism and positive energy to live as good citizens and God fearing persons, which was St Don Bosco, the founder of Salesian Society's dream for every youngster.
