India - Another year of blessings: 61 Salesian priests ordained in the South Asia region

(ANS - New Delhi) - The vocation of Fr Ajay Shelke was inspired by watching a film and the desire to meet the protagonists in Lonavala where there is a Salesian school. Fr Mylin Noronha’s vocation was the result of a growing interest in music. These are just two of the many vocational stories that were crowned in recent months across the South Asia region.  In fact, 61 Salesians were ordained priest.

According to the official statistics reported for this formation cycle, ordinations were celebrated in 10 of the Indian Provinces and the Vice-Province of Sri Lanka.

In general, the numbers are as follows:

• From the Province of Mumbai (INB) - 5 ordinations;

• From the Province of Calcutta (INC) - 6 ordinations;

• From the Province of Guwahati (ING) - 3 ordinations;

• From the Province of Hyderabad (INH) - 4 ordinations;

• From the Province of Bangalore (INK) - 9 ordinations;

• From the Province of Chennai (INM) - 9 ordinations;

• From the Province of New Delhi (INN) - 6 ordinations;

• From the Province of Goa (INP) - 2 ordinations;

• From the Province of Shillong (INS) - 5 ordinations;

• From the Province of Trichy (INB) - 9 ordinations;

•From the Vice-Province of Sri Lanka (LKC) - 3 ordinations.

In the end, Fr Ajay did not get to see the two protagonists of the film "Ghulam" that he had hoped to meet in Lonavala, but he saw so many needy children on the streets that he felt the desire to do something for them, and so he joined the Salesian novitiate.

Fr Mylin Noronha decided to accept the invitation to reside at the Salesian boarding school just to be have more freedom from his family. "But in the end I became a priest," he said today.
