(ANS - Madrid) - Over 1.2 million minors in the world are deprived of their freedom in prisons, police stations and detention centers. Most of them are there without a  trial, without criminal records, and for even simple things such as sleeping on the street. They do not receive legal assistance, often no one knows they are there and, even worse, they share cells with adults accused of violent crimes or of sexual assaults.

Freetown, Sierra Leone - June 2021 - As the main child protection and rehabilitation agency in Sierra Leone, the Salesian "Don Bosco Fambul" house commemorates the Day of the African Child every year, together with its small beneficiaries. This year, the event focused on the culture and traditions of four African nations - Sierra Leone, South Africa, Kenya and Egypt - and also included a narrative on how to care for children in the 21st century. Other activities were then organized aimed at entertaining the minors received at the Salesian center and at alleviating their traumas.

(ANS – New Rochelle) – The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression, recognized on June 4 each year since its United Nations designation in 1982, affirms the commitment by the UN and the international community to protect the rights of children. This work is guided by the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the most rapidly and widely ratified international human rights treaty in history. Salesian Missions, the U.S. development arm of the Salesians of Don Bosco, joins humanitarian organizations and the international community in honouring that day and remember what Salesian missionaries do in more than 130 countries around the globe work to ensure that all youth know their rights, are able to fully participate in their communities, and receive the support they need in the aftermath of trauma and abuse.

Freetown, Sierra Leone - March 2021 - On 29 March the Salesian work "Don Bosco Fambul" started distributing clothing and hygiene items to women who lost everything in the fire of 25 March in the suburb of Susan Bay. "Don Bosco Fambul" is currently working closely with the government to mitigate the suffering of thousands of people, especially young people and children.

(ANS - Freetown) - The capital of Sierra Leone is once again the scene of a tragedy of immense proportions: a vast fire that broke out on Wednesday night in the suburb of Susan Bay, near the bay of Freetown, destroyed more than 10 hectares of land covered with shacks and huts in wood and sheet metal. Over 500 of these houses are reduced to ashes and more than 5,000 people have lost everything, including more than 600 minors, boys and girls, beneficiaries of the socio-educational programs of the Salesian "Don Bosco Fambul". The Salesians have already announced that their doors are open to welcome, help and protect, especially children, adolescents and mothers with small children.

(ANS - Freetown) - Thousands of minors roam the streets of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, every day. They don't go to school because they are orphans or have been kicked out or ran away from home and survive by grouping into gangs. In many cases they come from large families where there was not enough food or space for everyone, and if they are girls or young women the dangers for them double ... The coronavirus, in this past year, has further increased the problems for these children, that during the lockdown they had nowhere to hide. However, the “Don Bosco” youth center of Dwarzak parish in Freetown has become a big family for them, where they can play, learn, receive food and, at the same time, lay the foundations for a dignified future.

  • Italy – A Salesian on the front line of the war in Ukraine: "Being close counts, words come later"

(ANS - Rome) - As he tells with a gentleness that does not seem to come from horror, he is "resting a little bit" in Rome these days. Fr Oleh Ladnyuk is a Ukrainian Salesian priest who is a military chaplain at the front, among the soldiers who fight in defence of their country and among the civilians who for over two years have seen their lives wiped out. He brings humanitarian aid where the missiles fall and from those places he helps with the evacuation of young people and adults - so far at least 500 people, but there are probably many more. These days the Salesian – who carries out his ministry in Dnipro and teaches History in a state school in the city – is in Rome to take part with two other priests and a dozen lay people from his country in the "Accompanying when Trauma Hits" course hosted by the Pontifical Salesian University in collaboration with the Faculty of Educational Sciences, with the DON BOSCO NEL MONDO Foundation and the Don Bosco Network. A project that aims to provide theoretical and methodological tools to deal with the traumas caused by war.

  • Latin America – Strengthening Vocational and Educational Commitment Today: 30 Years of the Salesian School in Latin America

(ANS) – Since the first meeting in Cumbayá (Ecuador), 30 years ago, educational processes on the continent have found a collaborative epicentre which has given rise to the Salesian School in (Latin) America  – ESA, in Spanish – as a forum for reflection and a common path. Many Salesians of Don Bosco (SDB), Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (FMA) and other groups of the Salesian Family (SF) have enriched this synodal journey, focusing on young people and their integral development.  What are today's demands of us in the educational field? How are we building the Salesian School of the future? Can we further strengthen this great Salesian educational network in America? Some FMAs and Salesians who were at the first meeting in 1994, share their experience and their vision of how this journey has allowed a growth in the understanding of the youth reality, in the strategic decisions within the Provinces themselves and in the challenges that emerge for Salesian education.
